Overview
Gilbert & Johnson Pharmacy offers Pharmacy First sore throat assessment for eligible patients. Our pharmacist will review your symptoms, advise on likely cause, and provide NHS-funded treatment where clinically appropriate.
Pharmacy First sore throat service
Sore throat is common and is usually viral, but some cases are linked to suspected streptococcal infection. We assess symptoms and severity to determine whether self-care, NHS treatment, or referral is the safest next step.
Symptoms we assess during consultation
Pain or scratchy throat
Discomfort that worsens when swallowing, talking, or eating.
Inflamed throat or tonsils
Redness, swelling, or irritation in the throat and tonsil area.
Associated infection symptoms
Fever, headache, tiredness, cough, or cold-like symptoms.

Eligibility
- Ages 5 years and above under Pharmacy First sore throat criteria
- Symptoms suitable for community pharmacy assessment
- No immediate red-flag symptoms requiring urgent medical care

Assessment and treatment support are NHS funded for eligible patients under Pharmacy First.
Seek urgent help if needed
Seek urgent care if you have breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, severe dehydration, persistent high fever, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
