Infected Insect Bites Treatment

Advice and NHS-funded treatment support for infected insect bites (ages 1+)

Overview

Gilbert & Johnson Pharmacy provides Pharmacy First assessment for infected insect bites and stings in eligible patients aged 1 year and above. We assess symptoms, advise on infection severity, and provide treatment where clinically appropriate.

What is an infected insect bite?

Most bites and stings settle quickly, but some become infected if skin is damaged or repeatedly scratched. Infection can cause increasing pain, swelling, warmth, discharge, and spreading redness. Prompt assessment helps identify when antibiotic treatment is needed.

Symptoms we assess

Pain and spreading redness

Inflammation extending beyond the original bite site

Swelling and local heat

Worsening tenderness, warmth, or itch

Possible discharge

Pus or fluid suggesting local infection

Symptoms not improving

Persistent or worsening signs after early self-care
