Overview
Gilbert & Johnson Pharmacy provides Pharmacy First impetigo assessment for eligible patients aged 1 year and above. We assess symptoms, advise on infection control, and provide NHS-funded treatment where clinically appropriate.
About impetigo
Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection, commonly affecting children but possible at any age. It often starts with red sores or blisters that burst and form characteristic honey-coloured crusts.

Red sores or blisters
Often around the nose, mouth, or on arms and legs
Golden crusting
Crusty patches after blisters burst
Local spread
New lesions or extension to nearby skin
How it works
How we help
Treatment options depend on lesion type, spread, and clinical suitability.
- Hydrogen peroxide cream for localised non-bullous impetigo where suitable
- Topical antibiotic options such as fusidic acid where indicated
- Oral antibiotics for wider non-bullous spread when appropriate
- Hygiene and infection-control advice to reduce transmission
- Referral if more serious infection is suspected
Eligibility
- Ages 1 year and above for Pharmacy First impetigo pathway
- Symptoms suitable for community pharmacy assessment
- No severe systemic illness or urgent red-flag signs
- Meets NHS Pharmacy First criteria after consultation

Assessment and eligible treatment are NHS funded under Pharmacy First criteria.
Seek urgent help if needed
Seek urgent medical advice if infection is rapidly worsening, spreading widely, associated with fever, or if you or your child feels significantly unwell.
